Tuesday at 7:00 PM – The Story of Porcelain between East and West (17th-19th Centuries)
March 17, 2026
We continue the series of conversations at Sakura – Cafenea & Ceainărie, but this time we look beyond the liquor in the cup, to the object that houses it: the porcelain.
If on Monday we explored the journey of tea around the world and especially in the Asian area, on Tuesday evening we will focus on the “white gold” – that precious material that fascinated kings, provoked industrial espionage and definitively changed the aesthetics of our tables. We will travel through the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the periods in which porcelain evolved from an exotic luxury to a perfect art form.
The meeting is a natural continuation of Monday evening, because the history of tea cannot be separated from the history of the vessels in which it was served.
What will we discover together on Tuesday evening?
• Fascination for the Orient (17th century): How the first pieces of Chinese porcelain arrived in Europe and why they were considered more valuable than gold.
• The deciphered mystery (18th century): The story of the European alchemists who tried to steal the “recipe” of the Chinese and the emergence of the first famous manufactures (Meissen, Sèvres).
• Refinement and Accessibility (19th Century): How the Industrial Revolution transformed porcelain from a privilege of royal courts into a symbol of bourgeois elegance and the ritual of afternoon tea.
• Evolution of Forms: From simple, handleless bowls to delicate cups and saucers and spectacular teapots that defined social etiquette.
We remain in the same relaxed format, without rigid lectures. It is an evening in which we will admire (visually and through storytelling) the evolution of taste and human craftsmanship.
