Blooming Tea

January 29, 2026

Blooming tea consists of a bundle of dried tea leaves tied around one or more dried flowers. All of these are trapped in a bulb, then left to dry. When infused, the bundle opens up and appears to bloom, with the flower in the center appearing spectacularly towards the end of the process. The most commonly used flowers are amaranth, chrysanthemum, jasmine, lily, and hibiscus. Blooming tea was developed in the 1980s in Yunnan, China, but there are sources that claim the technique is several centuries old. It became popular in Western countries in the early 2000s.
